Top of the pack

The Beogram 4001 was the model designed to match the Beomaster 4401, the all black version of the Beomaster 4400. It was a modified Beogram 4002 and existed only in the later DC version. The platter was the same as that fitted to the late Beogram 4002 as the record detecting mechanism would have struggled with the fitting of a black platter. No production special cartridges were made for this deck so one either had to fit a matching but lowly specified MMC20E or MMC20S or have a silver MMC20CL or MMC20EN. These days, a Soundsmith SMMC20CL+ would of course match very well or one of the retipped models as seen on the model pictured.

As this was a prototype model like the Beomaster 4401, very few of these decks appear to have been made and the one pictured was discovered only recently. Its provenance cannot be completely proved as no labels remain.

Aside from the colour, the deck resembled the Beogram 4002 in all respects with no remote facility though the cut out for the CD4 switch was fitted. There was no LED on the front panel unlike the Beogram 4004.

Author Notes:

Beoworld says: Looking at this deck, one could almost think that it had been converted after being made. The black arms do not stand out in the same way as the 4002 and one can see why this product would seem very rare. Same excellent performance though and a perfect match for the nearly as rare Beomaster 4401. The Beocord 2200 matches this perfectly of course.
